I AM A PUBLIC TENANT AND I VOTE

In public housing we support and help one another. We have very strong community values. Living in Public Housing is nothing like what you see on TV. We are getting sick and tired of being misrepresented - by those with a vested interest in denigrating public tenants and public housing. Fair go Australia.

Interview with YANI - staunch member of
Friends of Public Housing Vic -FOPHV

Yani's thoughts and opinions

ON PUBLIC HOUSING
Public Housing is diminishing. It's disappearing before our eyes. We must put a stop to this- because homelessness will increase and more people will suffer. Crime, depression and suicide will increase and jails will be the next public housing.

ON THE NEWS
It's amazing how homelessness and the public housing issue don't get a mention unless it's to bag us.
We always hear negative stories about public housing in the media -never positive stories. But if a celebrity has a bad hair day, breaks up with their partner or has a facelift, then that becomes 6 o'clock news.

ON SOCIAL MEDIA
People are living their lives through a little screen. You can put your life in your pocket and take it out when you want to see how your life is progressing. People would rather talk to people on Facebook than talk to their neighbour- that's even if they know who their neighbour is! Everyone's so busy on social media it seems like no-one's interested anymore in having a kiss and a cuddle. The phone can't talk to you. It can't understand you. It can't give you what another person can.
That's one reason why society's getting angrier by the day. I've seen a lot of road rage lately.

ON TV
TV has run out of ideas. Most of it's just recycled mind-numbing crap. Australia is becoming so Americanised. We allow America to think for us. They didn't need to invade us- American lifestyles and values have taken over our country through the telly.

On TV today everyone's inspired, everybody loves somebody, and everybody's crying. Everyone needs therapy. Everyone's a role model. Everybody is young, slim and attractive. O give me a break!

Entertainment on the TV now is all about cooking shows and people renovating their homes. If people get thrilled by renos and cooking, then Australia needs to take a good hard look at itself.
On the other hand, if they were building public housing for the needy-  then they'd have my full attention- and my vote. If not- why bother watching these shows?

Another example- take the Queens 90th birthday celebrations on the telly the other night. All those countries were conquered and ruled by the English - and there they were celebrating the Queen's Birthday and even helping her to blow out the candles.
"Happy Birthday to You. You have colonised us too"
Wake up to yourselves!  If they were celebrating their independence then that would be a lot more interesting than celebrating being conquered. All the Queen's ever done in her life is cut ribbons. For her 90th she should be presented with a golden pair of scissors on a velvet cushion. I guess you can tell I'm not a Royalist   ; )

ON POLITICIANS
Don't get me started.. They talk too much, get paid too much and they deliver nothing. I need disabled parking outside my home. Every politician I've spoken to has promised me to do it. They even stood there taking notes while they were talking to me. They just wanted my vote. Nothing eventuated. Sometimes I have to be in a wheelchair following surgery. I've had heaps of surgeries ever since I was a kid. My joints are so full of iron I'm like the bionic man. It'd be easier for me to buy an extended roller, a can of blue paint and do it myself. BUT if a politician ended up in a wheelchair  it'd be done in a minute - in fact they'd give themselves two parking spaces.

ON POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
You can't crack a joke these days without offending someone and being called a racist, sexist, homophobic or whatever. Every word- every syllable, gets broken down and analysed- and if you get it wrong they jump all over you. They want to drag you down to the stocks until you learn some manners, and become politically correct, and promise never to offend anyone ever again.

Pretty soon we'll have to look up jokes in the archives to see how people used to talk and how they used to be themselves.

ON STIGMA
Don't judge what you can't see. I have a severe disability- walking is a big deal for me. The cops stopped me once walking down Carlton cos they thought I was drunk- and made me breathe into a breathaliser bag. As a matter of fact I don't drink, take drugs or gamble. I did as they instructed. When they realised their mistake, they were so embarrassed all they could say was 'Have a nice night' and they drove off.

It's not a crime if you can't read or write too well. You can still get through life ok. I might not be able to read or write like the rest of them but I do not need anyone to think for me. I'm very sharp. I'm clever. I'm a highly skilled tradie. Ive got common sense and people skills. 'Please' and 'thankyou' go a long way.

 LAST WORD
Public tenants are sick of being treated like we are some kind of social experiment. Get to know us and our communities before you judge us. Public housing is an essential social service. Just look around you at all the homelessness and you tell me if Public Housing is important. Why not focus on the politicians for a change and how they carry on.. All they are into is power, money and greed. Maybe it's them that need theraparising- so they can learn to stop judging others and be more compassionate.

They should stop thinking about their own back pocket and their power- trips. Fix up the country's problems- housing, hospitals, education and employment.

" SORRY- NOTHING'S AVAILABLE "

STAGGERING AMOUNT OF PUBLIC HOUSING PROPERTIES SIT EMPTY WHILE PEOPLE LIVE ON THE STREET OR IN CARS

Please cut, paste and watch this video clip

Well done channel 9's 'TODAY' show for exposing this national scandal

The stats
NUMBER OF EMPTY PUBLIC HOUSING PROPERTIES

VIC      1,279
QLD       877
NSW   1,482
ACT       222
SA      1,662
WA        759
NT         258

All State governments have a responsibility to immediately fill these properties.

These assets do not belong to political parties to give to their 'developer mates'. They belong to the people of Australia.

Friends of Public Housing Vic have solidarity with homeless people. Unlike Housing Ministers who live in their ivory towers and for whom homelessness is academic - or worse a nuisance -
we talk to lots of homeless people and hear their stories.

I will share some of these stories in a future post.

SUE BOLTON - SOCIALIST ALLIANCE

Sue Bolton- Socialist Alliance Councillor for Moreland.

Big thumbs-up to Sue Bolton for telling it like it is.

Sue is one of the few politicians who has the courage and honesty to openly criticise the government's direction of privatising public housing under the guise of 'social', 'affordable' and 'community' housing.

Sue gave an excellent speech at the Bendigo St Occupation in Collingwood. Empty government-owned houses are now being occupied peacefully by homeless people- a political action organised by the Homeless Person's Union- a union that is not afraid to stand up to callous governments and demand the right to housing for homeless people.

Here are some extracts from Sue Bolton's speech.

"The actions of all the people who have initiated this occupation have given us the opportunity to relaunch something really, really necessary which is a campaign for public housing.

I'm really happy that activists in this campaign have been focusing on public housing and have not been sidetracked by sneaky forms of privatisation where governments are handing over properties to Not-for-Profit Housing Associations which operate just like private landlords- at least most of them do.

When the government announced it was giving away some of the East-West Link houses over to 'social' or 'affordable' housing, the media never really asked any questions like 'How many houses? What are you going to do with the rest? And what do you mean by social or affordable housing?'

There's a lot of bullshit from the government about 'affordable' and 'social' housing. It's not legit what the government is doing.

People are really suffering from the housing crisis. The government doesn't want people to understand that public housing is the answer!

Over many years governments- and even people within the housing sector that might have come from an activist background- have been denigrating the idea of public housing.

We need to widen the campaign and build broader support. That's going to be critical. We need to knock back this attitude that says 'public housing is gone. We don't need that any more'. We absolutely need public housing! There's no way the market will provide affordable housing.

What we need to fight for and rebuild a movement for- and I think this occupation is laying the basis for us to do that - is to relaunch a campaign for genuine public housing.

If we can win this - so that these houses are turned over to become genuine public housing - not fake 'social housing', or fake 'affordable housing' then this will be a win for everyone all over Australia, not just in Victoria.

GLOBAL LESSONS - NEW MEXICO

Post by Wendy Schumann.
Greetings.
I'm from Albuquerque New Mexico and we have only a negligible amount of public housing
left.

The Government is now leaving the problem of homelessness to the charities and housing to the private sector.

The homeless shelters and missions are full to overflowing. The amount of people homeless in Albuquerque is PITIFUL. At one time I brought food to 34 homeless people lying on the pavement in freezing temperatures outside a shelter because the shelter was already full.

Australia does not need to go down the same path!  I would strongly advise Australia to hang on to all of its public housing because in reality it is the only system that works.

There is a great deal of money to be made from privatising public housing - billions of dollars- and there are powerful groups that do not want to have the apple cart upset.

The general public should get behind Friends of Public Housing because they are a committed group who have the guts to try and alert people about what is really going on.

If the government succeeds in its plan to get rid of public housing- then you will have many more years of increasing homelessness and housing stress, and Australia will be a very different place to live in than it is now.

SAVE OUR SENATE

Leading up to the Federal Election

The Senate 'Reforms' are an attack on our democracy.

It's amazing how the word 'reform' can be just another weasel-word which ends up meaning anything but... For example- 'Sweeping Reform Knocks on Public Housing Door.' ?  The destruction of public housing as we know it, is more like it ...

One of the frustrating difficulties we face, campaigning to 'Save Public Housing', is that if Liberal, Labor and the Greens all agree on a course of action -  whether overtly or covertly - then something as outrageous as giving away public housing via massive stock transfers - can be secretly decided on, initiated and executed without any public knowledge or debate.

It takes patience and persistence to find out exactly what is going on - as real intentions and plans are often tucked away and buried in documents or written in deliberately ambiguous language...

Politicians will very rarely go against the party line regardless of their personal beliefs about an issue- so we end up with far too many YES men and women - or else they refuse to be publicly drawn on the matter. Subsequently there are hardly any independent voices to challenge the status quo.

If that isn't a flaw in the system I don't know what is...

A very nice politician - and Friends of Public Housing is not party political - confided in us, that although he understands our position and is sympathetic to our cause, if he were to openly say so - he would be 'crucified by his party'. So much for Freedom of Speech and democratic debate..

The privatisation of public housing is a class issue - and many politicians, coming from the middle and upper classes, simply do not understand the importance of hanging onto public housing. They just don't get it.

But back to the Senate 'Reforms'..

We need politicians like John Madigan, Jacquie Lambie and Ricky Muir to bring a fresh and different perspective to parliament, politicians who won't just rubber-stamp stuff, and who will speak out when necessary.

Voters need a lot more choice when we go to vote... A duopoly- with the Greens holding the balance of power?  No thanks. It is an unhealthy state of affairs - far removed from true democracy.

THE SENATE REFORMS ARE A 'STITCH-UP'

Sometime in the future I predict there will also be an attempt to abolish compulsory voting - which I very much believe in- because it suits their interests to do so  - playing on the apathy - or  disenfranchisement - of too many people, and thereby shoring up more power and control for themselves.

Democracy requires all of us to get involved - we can't really complain later if we don't participate where and when we can.

Finally I really like the refreshing way the following arguments are presented in plain English - I'm sick of how some politicians try to make out that the average person could not possibly understand the complexities of their arguments - nonsense - good old common sense takes you a very long way- and issues should be explained simply and clearly so that they are understood.

The following links strongly make the case against the senate 'reforms'.

In response to the argument that these changes do increase democratic choice, well it might seem that way on the surface. The changes mean we have at least 6 choices above the line when voting for the Senate.

But the real-world outcome is that the micro-parties and independents will find it even harder now to be elected, than under the old system whereby they harvested preferences just like the major parties do all the time...  Stephen Maine says it's 'well nigh impossible'

So how can these changes be seen as democratic?  They will lead to a closed shop.

Previous voting patterns show that the public is becoming very disillusioned with the main parties and want independent voices in the Senate to ' keep them honest'.
